Grok is a no-cost artificial intelligence—with some additional functions—which answers X users' requests when they mention it in a message.

It is commonly used to give reactions or further context to other posters' comments, but people on X are also can alter an uploaded image through its AI image editing function.

Background of Criticism and Rules

The tool has been faulted for allowing users to create pictures and videos with nudity and sexualised material, and it was in the past accused of making sexually explicit material of public figures.

"X has been allowing the production and distribution of these pictures for a long time without taking any action and we have yet to see any action by oversight bodies," the expert added.

XAI's own acceptable use policy prohibits "portraying likenesses of persons in a graphic fashion".

In a statement, Ofcom said it was unlawful to "create or distribute private pictures or illegal content" and confirmed this included sexual deepfakes made with AI.

It said platforms such as X were required to take "necessary measures" to "lessen the danger" of users encountering illegal content on their platforms and to delete it swiftly when they become aware of it.
